A roof gets inspected after a Gulf storm. Siding usually does not, and that is exactly where wind uplift and driven rain leave marks nobody goes looking for: an impact dent from hail, a course that has come loose or is missing outright, a seam that let water behind it and never dried out. That last one is the expensive kind, because the siding can still look fine from the yard while the sheathing underneath is going soft.

On the Gulf coastal plain, sun and humidity work a south-facing elevation harder than most parts of the country, and paint that has chalked or is peeling has stopped doing the one job that matters: keeping water out of the siding underneath it.
